Brief

 

The Sims 4 latest game expansion pack Snowy Escape tells the story of a snowy, Japanese-inspired mountainous area that features activities such as snowboarding, skiing, sledding and mountain climbing, as well as natural hot springs. It brings three brand new festivals to the world of Mt. Komorebi: Festival of Light, Festival of Snow, and Festival of Youth. I am very lucky to work on the festival notification board background design. This expansion pack release on Nov 13th, 2020 to more than 9 Million MAU (monthly active users).

Inspiration & Research

At the beginning of the design process, I researched the celebration of snow, youth and light in the context of Japanese culture. At the same time, I kept reminding myself that The Sims 4 is a game with a wide global audience.

Festival of Snow Design Decisions and Iterations

I chose snowmen, snow mountains, snowflakes and color blue as the initial design elements to design the "Festival of Snow" background. Through iterations, I chose snowflakes (with different designs and sizes) as the final background design to better align with the snow festival theme and the game theme.

Festival of Youth Design Decisions and Iterations

I chose saplings, toys, round fan, traditional Koinobori flag and color green as the initial design elements to design the "Festival of Youth" background. After many revisions, I chose peach-blossom round fan and traditional Koinobori flag which represent good wishes as the final background design to better align with the youth festival theme.
